The Witch of Clan Sinclair Karen Ranney 9780062242464 Books

I loved this book. It was not nearly as angsty as most of Ms Ranney's other books - but it was just as emotional and entirely refreshing!

I adored Logan - he was simply amazing! I was worried when I read the blurb that this was going to be a love triangle kind of book. With him engaged or almost engaged to another woman. But thankfully that was not the case. His only interest was in Mairi.

Mairi was a good heroine - but a bit on the annoying side of an independent woman. I admired her devotion to the paper and even her desire to have her voice heard. But she was a tad bit self absorbed and impetuous.

I loved the banter between Logan and Mairi. They are perfect for each other and he knows it, and is willing to do whatever is necessary to have them be together. Mairi was not going to be an easy conquest and Logan really worked for their happily ever after !!

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance and even though it is the second book in the series, it can been easily read as a stand alone - but once you read it you are going to want to read the first book!!

The Witch of Clan Sinclair Karen Ranney 9780062242464 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed reading this book. There was humour aplenty among the characters of Mairi and Logan. I found some of their situations rather hilarious. Of course it wouldn't be a story if there wasn't a bad guy and in this case, there were two! I thought the characters were well developed and the storyline unique. I would recommend you read the Clan Sinclair Series in order of publication. That's my personal preference, not a necessity. Enjoy reading!
This was an excellent storyline by this author. I enjoyed all of the characters so much. The storyline contained just the right amount of love and romance with a really good plot, to keep me turning the pages to see what would happen next.
The author did a wonderful job with developing the romance between the two main characters and also updating us on previous characters whose romance was also in this series.
I am anxious to read more from this author as I thoroughly enjoy her style of writing an excellent love story.
I was really looking forward to reading this book, after having enjoyed book 1 and the excerpts of The Witch. However, I got frustrated after 30% of the book. The plot is very interesting, but I couldn't see how H and h got so much attracted to each other - or later, in love. I even thought I'd missed something, or that some pages were missing in my edition!
Actually, I expected more "battles" between H/h, at least in their first meetings, since they seemed to be in different positions (journalist/editor x politician) and to hold different opinions as well.
I considered rating the book 3.5 stars, but Ms. Ranney writes well; the (little) part about the first steps of women's rights groups made sense in the story, and H/h aren't the "perfect" people we read about in other books, made me change my mind.
Am I looking forward to book 3, though? Absolutely!
I loved the characters in this book. Mairi Sinclair is a very driven newspaper woman who was born out of time so to speak. She has been involved with the family newspaper since she was a young girl, first helping her father, who was the founder and later assisting her brother, Macrath, until he became wealthy through his invention of ice machines so that he moved on to bigger things and left Mairi in charge of the newspaper. Mairi is a forerunner in the women's rights movement, even though she isn't at the forefront of the actual organization. Rather, she lives the dream to the best of her ability by actually "doing" what she wants to do within the huge limitations imposed upon women of that day. She operates a newspaper and actually reports, writes, typesets and then helps print out the articles - even hawks them on occasion. She loves her job - she eats, sleeps, lives the newspaper. However, this might be in part due to the fact that she was greatly hurt and disappointed by a former lover - or, at least a man she thought she loved.

When Mairi is refused admittance to a gathering where a famous author will speak - due to the fact that she is a woman - she decides to write a critical "broadside" about the individual - Logan Harrison, Lord Provost of Edinburgh - who denied her access to the meeting room simply because the rules were that "only men" could attend.

Logan is a young man who has worked very hard for his political career and is, in fact, respected by pretty much everyone who knows him. He has the reputation of being kind and fair and is the youngest man ever to hold the position. In our time, the position would be somewhat equivalent to that of "Mayor" in the United States and that of "Lord Mayor" in England. So, you could say that he was a very important personage. Logan isn't happy about the broadside and confronts Mairi at her newspaper offices. Although somewhat intimidated by the very tall and broad shouldered, handsome Scot, Mairi doesn't back down one inch.

However, Mairi very quickly finds doors shut to her that were formerly open - important doors, such as people she used for information for her newspaper. So, she decides to beard the lion in his den and calls upon Logan at his residence to confront him and basically accuses him of blackballing her. She is dumbfounded when he invites her to stay for dinner which is "potato soup" but reluctantly agrees. She soon realizes that the big Scot isn't as bad as she thought he was and is persuaded that he didn't pressure people to close their doors on her. In fact, after meeting with Logan, she soon finds that he personally made certain those doors were open to her once again.

In Mairi's journey to find her way in the world, she is soon brought into the suffrage movement of that day and agrees to speak at one of their meetings. They are attempting to get approval for a march but the Lord Provost is concerned there will be too much violence so he has put their request on the back burner. He does decide to attend the meeting to learn more about the movement, with his presence being hidden in an alcove provided by the leader of the movement. During the meeting, crude, male demonstrators break up the meeting while Mairi is speaking and although most of the women escape, Mairi is confronted and suffers some injuries on her way home. Logan saves the day and takes her home with him, calls a physician and from that day forward, he is "all in" as it relates to a deeper relationship with the fiercely independent Mairi.

Logan's and Mairi's is a sweet romance but it moved very slowly - too slowly for me. At times, I wanted to hit Mairi over the head with something. Any other man would have given up on this woman who was determined to work and live in near solitude all her days. We get to take a visit to Macrath's and Virginia's home (The Devil of Clan Sinclair) where Mairi takes a break from the overwhelming state she finds herself in since the day she became involved with Logan. Of course, Logan follows her there but their interaction leaves a lot to be desired. Eventually, they come together a couple of other times and circumstances conspire "against" them but actually work "for" them. Logan decides to come up with a plan that will help him penetrate the shell around Mairi. He was adorable and I would give him 5 stars. But only 3 stars overall for this book.
Mairi Sinclair is a woman intent on pursuing equal rights for women, especially the vote. She runs her deceased father's newspaper but has to run her columns under her brother or another male's name. She meets Logan Harrison, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, when she is refused entry to the Edinburgh Press Club because she is female. Harrison is intrigued by Mairi especially when she loses her temper, which she does all too frequently. Mairi is definitely attracted to Harrison although she doesn't want to be because that would be just too female. Mairi writes a not too flattering poem about Harrison in her paper and their relationship takes off; Harrison finds that he likes the verbal confrontations with Mairi and the way that she makes him feel free as he hasn't in a long time.
I loved this book. It was not nearly as angsty as most of Ms Ranney's other books - but it was just as emotional and entirely refreshing!
