Mr Darcy Obsession A Pride and Prejudice Variation Abigail Reynolds Books

The first half of this variation is somewhat sad and almost upsetting: Mr Bennet has died, Jane has married a man she doesn't love to help her family, and Lizzy is in London with her uncle and aunt's family assisting with their children to help pay for her room and board. Darcy finds out from a very remorseful Bingley about their reduced standing. This hits Darcy hard because he knows it was because of him that the Bennet family found themselves in such dire straights. Had he not encouraged Bingley to abandon Miss Bennet they would have married and the whole family would have been protected.

This sets the course for Darcy's obsession...he must see Elizabeth and find out if she is well. Of course when one gets a taste of that to which one is addicted, the addiction grows. One time only became daily and the attraction grew on both sides. Until a really bad (but not indecent) proposal. But when Darcy disappears for a month, Elizabeth assumes the worst and decides she must get over this man who is so far above her. Another begins to court her. Enter Charlie, a street urchin employed to aid in Darcy's pursuit of Elizabeth. He will do anything and is a competent spy keeping Darcy apprised of the goings on in the Gardiner household.

Obviously things must deteriorate when Lydia arrives at their house pregnant and unmarried. Elizabeth returns to Meryton after a tearful farewell to Darcy only to be further lowered in her standing while she helps do Jane's work in her husband's shop during the last weeks of Jane's pregnancy.

After Darcy realizes that he cannot do without Elizabeth, things become lighter and more entertaining. The conversations with the aunt are hilarious, while those with the uncle truly infuriating. It is a wild ride to their happily ever after but very worth the trip.

Mr Darcy Obsession A Pride and Prejudice Variation Abigail Reynolds Books Reviews

A lot going on in this variation by Abigail Reynolds. After the Bennet women loose Longbourn, the daughters are placed in a difficult situation. Jane marries an older gentleman from Meryton, Elizabeth goes to London to help with the Gardiner children, Mary leaves to care for an elderly relative, Kitty and Lydia stay in Meryton with their mother at the Mrs. Bennet's sister's home. Poor Bingley is leaving London for Scarborough to run his family's business after finding out about the Bennets. Knowing Elizabeth is in London on Gracechurch Street, he frequents the park near her Uncle's home. Finally, they reconnect in the park and Elizabeth has hopes. After meeting her consistency, Darcy has his annual trip to Rosings and the longer he's gone, the more she figures she lost her chance with Darcy. More Bennet problems occur, and it takes the undying love of Darcy for Elizabeth to solve the problems so they can marry.
I loved this brilliant variation of Pride and Prejudice. The author, Abigail Reynolds, does a great job of staying true to the world Jane Austen created yet let her creative light shine through. I was utterly enthralled with this book from page one. The story opens with what happens to the Bennets after Mr. Bennet dies and Elizabeth Bennet's refusal to wed Mr. Collins. You get to see old friends like Mr. Bingley, Georgiana, and Colonel Fitzwilliam while you are introduced to new characters. You are also taken into Mr. Darcy's head. We get to see a different side of him which is opposite from the aloof proud persona that we expect from him. You feel his desire and passion for Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth Bennet is just as witty, straight forward, and loyal to her family as we know her to be. You learn the depth of her feelings for Mr. Darcy. I know earlier I used the words passion and desire but please don't be misled. There are no steamy scenes. The author stays true to the time period. Normally, I like the romantic interludes to be steamy and not implied. Yet the descriptive language that the author uses to describe Mr. Darcy holding Elizabeth Bennet's naked hand for the first time and placing a kiss on each scarred finger... well let's just say it leaves you panting and wanting more. How did she do that? Pride and Prejudice lovers will enjoy this variation because you get to be with handsome, noble Mr. Darcy again. Don't fret if you never read Pride and Prejudice, you will still enjoy getting to know Mr. Darcy.

"I cannot explain why I must be with you, except to say that the sun shines more brightly and the very air tastes sweeter where you are. By your side, I notice and rejoice in marvels of nature that are invisible to me otherwise. I cannot explain how it is that you have bewitched me, but bewitched I am."
